Like the city of Berlin, Hamburg's smallest, more modest football club will look up on it's bigger, more established city rival during the 2024-25 season, after FC St. Pauli earned a promotion to the Bundesliga, while Hamburg failed to qualify and will remain in the 2. Bundesliga.
St. Pauli's promotion, after 13 years at the second tier of German football, just like Union Berlin's few seasons ago, will serve as a test case, due to the club's pronounced path of extreme dedication to its loyal fan base, anti-establishment and political and social responsibility, declared values of social and liberal stands, as well as anti-right-wing movements, as it opposes everything current big-time, big money and over commercialism world football stands for.
And just like Union Berlin, St. Pauli is more than a football club. Rather, it is a cult movement, a basin for working class people, with deep and profound love for the sub-culture.
And, yes, the Boys in Brown plays in St. Pauli's Reeperbahn, Hamburg's wild, night-time, red lights district.
Fußball-Club St Pauli von 1910 e.V. was established in 1910 and has spent most of its years in the Germany's lower divisions, winning some divisional titles here and there but remain unable to advance to the top tier, as they lost several times during the playoffs. First promotion to the Bundesliga occurred in 1977, but it lasted only one season.
While the club's official logo is a red circle with city walls inside, its supporters adopted the black flag with a skull and crossbones. It took club officials several years to realize the marketing potential of the logo, but they eventually bought the symbol’s license rights and it is now an official part of the club.
St. Pauli has officially adopted a defined left-wing political stand and published it as part of the values it stands for. The club was the first in Germany to abolish far-right nationalist from its home stadium and declared a fight against hooliganism that was wide-spread in the 80's. To be reminded of that, "No Football for Fascists" is painted in one of the stands.
St. Pauli's coach is 31-years old Fabian Hürzeler, who spent his playing career in lower ranks teams, such as Bayern Munich II, Hoffenheim II and 1860 Munich II. Hurzeler retired at an early age and went into coaching, serving as assistant manager for Germany U20. He became St. Pauli's head coach after the sack of Timo Schultz in 2022, taking a club that tempered with relegation and turning it around. Needless to say, his success has turned him to one of the hottest coaching properties in Germany.
So welcome back to the big league, St. Pauli. Will the club be able to maintain its culture revolution, anti-establishment, party atmosphere? Time will tell. But visiting teams will step up the pitch in 29,546-seat Millerntor-Stadion to the tunes of AC/DC's "Hells Bells" and will get a big "woo hoo!” to the rhythm of Blur’s “Song 2" when the Men in Brown will score.
After all, FC St. Pauli is more than a football club, it's a way of life.
