How does one begin when trying to write about Bob Dylan? Looking into some Rock music encyclopedias might be useful, but Dylan IS music encyclopedias and the effect he had in the music world is immense, second only, maybe, to the Beatles. And then again, Lennon and McCartney themselves have cited Dylan as being the man who have provided them with great influence.
Along the last 60 years, over 600 musicians have recorded songs written by Dylan, creating more than 1,500 covers of nearly 300 unique songs. The list is so long, so here's a list of just a select few: The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Adele, The Byrds, The Animals, Coldplay, Jeff Beck, Michael Bolton, David Bowie, Garth Brooks, Jackson Brown, Johnny Cash, Phil Collins, and on and on.
When Dylan won the Nobel Price of Literature in 2016, fellow troubadour and folk hero Leonard Cohen commented that, "Giving Dylan a Nobel Price is like hanging a medal over the Everest, saying it is the Highest mountain".
Robert Allan Zimmerman was Born in Minnesota in 1941, to a Jewish family, immigrants from Eastern Europe. He formed some music bands in high school, and shortly after, as a great admirer of Woody Guthrie, he left for New York, looking for his hero and changed his name to Bob Dylan.
By the early 60's Dylan was performing gigs and recording albums. By the time his second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963) was out, Dylan was regarded as the voice of a generation. The album contained the songs "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" among others.
By now, Dylan was a social activist, writing political songs and poems about and for the civil rights movement.
If that wasn't enough to cement Dylan's place in American and social culture, a year later he released his third album, "The Times They Are a-Changin'", which crown him as a cult hero.
When Dylan picked up an electric guitar instead of a classic guitar in 1965, a cry went out the he has betrayed the folk music and movement, but ultimately, he has revitalized the folk and music scenes.
Up to know, Dylan has recorded 40 studio albums and 17 live albums. He has sold over 125 million copies worldwide.
Dylan has won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award, both in 2001, for Best Original Song, 11 Grammy Awards, several of his recording were indicted into the Grammy and Rock N' Roll Hall of Fames.
