One must mention Bayern Munich when speaking about the DFB-Pokal (the German Cup). After all, the Bavarian powerhouse has won the cup a record number 20 times. But the cup, with its rich history, dramas, and many surprises, is much more than Bayern Munich. Much, much more. As a matter of fact, the tournament’s matches have emerged as one of the most exciting ones can find in global football. And fun. Lots of fun.
The German Cup competition has emerged in 1935 under the name Tschammer-Pokal and the first final saw FC Nurnberg beat Schalke 04 2-0. Amazingly, the competition wasn’t halted at the beginning of World War II, but rather only in 1943 and resumed in 1953 under the name DFB-Pokal (Deutscher Fusball-Bund – German Football Association) in West Germany. Between 1949-1991, until the unification of Germany, East Germany held its own competition.
What makes the German cup competition so much fun is the fact that every team who plays competitive football in the country, even amateurs, is entitled to compete. A total of 64 teams starts the competition – 32 come from the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga. The other 32 places are occupied by the top four clubs of the 3. Liga and the rest are cup winners of the regional football associations. Did we say fun? Over the years, there have been teams from 3rd and 4th tiers that stunned Bundesliga clubs. The only clubs not entitled to complete today are major clubs’ reserve teams.
During the cup’s first decade, there have been two Austrian clubs who have won the DFB-Pokal: SK Rapid Wien and First Vienna FC, who have won the cup in 1938 and 1943, respectively. The reason was the Anschluss of 1938 has merged Austrian and German clubs into the same leagues, as it did with the two countries.
Along the years, the DFB-Pokal finals were held in different stadiums. Starting in 1984, the match was moved permanently to Berlin’s Olympiastadion, then to West Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany, the final match has remained in the nation’s capital. Interestingly enough, Berlin’s Hertha BSC has never made it to the final from 1984 on. Rather, it was the club’s reserve Hertha BSC II (1993) and FC Union Berlin (2001), both of the 3rd tier at the time, who were runners-up.
In 1956, Karlsruher SC become the first club to win the DFB-Pokal two years in a row In 2000 Bayern Munich became the first club to win the cup ten times In 2020, Bayern Munich became the first club to win the cup 20 times, an achievement no other club comes close to match, as Werder Bremen sits second with 6 final wins.
The all-time appearance leader of the DFB-Pokal is Charly Korbel who registered 602 matches for Eintracht Frankfurt between 1972-1991. Second is Manfred Kaltz with 581 matches for Hamburger SV between 1971-1991. The third is Oliver Kahn, who played in 557 cup matches for Karlsruher SC and Bayern Munich between 1987-2008.
The top DFB-Pokal goal-scorer is the all-time great Gerd Muller with 365 goals for Bayern Munich between 1965-1979. Second is Robert Lewandowski with 296 goals for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
The 2020-21 DFB-Pokal winner is Borussia Dortmund, who beat RB Leipzig 4-1.
